The Problems We are Addressing:

The Accessible Housing Crisis in Canada

It is a basic human right for all people to have equitable access to housing.

Unfortunately, many people with disabilities and older adults in Canada are inappropriately housed in long-term care facilities or are living in unsafe and inaccessible dwellings in the community, because they do not have access to affordable and accessible housing or the support services they require.

The problem extends to availability of accessible housing as the existing housing stock does not meet the growing need of Canada’s aging population and people with disabilities.

Canadians require more affordable and accessible housing options to optimize health and wellbeing.

Challenges With Aging in the Right Place in Canada

Older adults, families, and the professionals who support them struggle to navigate the systems and plan for aging in the right place because the information is fragmented, unclear, and is hard to trust.  Financial support is spotty at best and Canadians are struggling to find and afford the services they need when they need them most!

Impacts on public and professionals:

  • Increased anxiety and confusion
  • Unnecessary time spent searching for resources
  • Crisis-prompted decisions
  • Increased health and home safety risks
  • Caregiver burnout

Impacts on Healthcare system:

  • Fall-related hospitalizations
  • Increased emergency and Alternate Level of Care (ALC) utilization
  • Premature admissions to long-term care facilities
  • Escalating caregiver burnout that further strains home and community care capacity.
  • Higher system costs
    •
